Barbie Dreamhouse Adventures

Design, cook, and party with Barbie and friends.

ABOUT

Barbie Dreamhouse Adventures turns traditional play digital with a fun and immersive app.

Kids get to join Barbie in her dreamhouse which is already set up when starting the game. Kids can cook, customize their characters, take care of pets, and connect with other Barbie characters.

Beyond the Dreamhouse, kids can travel through Malibu to destinations like the beach, a nail salon, or even a concert. Each area includes basic mini-games, like getting a custom manicure, and can be decorated like the dreamhouse.

Ads appear periodically throughout the game most of which is to advertise the game developers other kids apps, like My Little Pony Rainbow Runners. It should be noted that this game is made by Budge, not Mattel.

There are daily rewards, however, to get the premium rewards you must purchase a VIP Club subscription. The subscription unlocks all the characters to play with, activities, clothes, and more. There’s a 7-day free trial then a monthly subscription is $6.99. The subscription definitely makes the gameplay more varied and unlocks a lot of interactive games and characters. Regular content updates also make the subscription worthwhile for the real Barbie lover in your house. That said, kids hit this paywall frequently. While they can continue to play they are regularly reminded that without the VIP Club they are missing out.

The app holds true to what most of us expect of Barbie, both positive and negative. While there is some diversity among characters it’s limited and stereotypes abound throughout. There’s no intellectual depth to the game, but for kids who want to experience more of the Barbie experience, this fits the bill.

GAME PLAY

The game starts with Barbie inside the Dreamhouse where kids are invited to start interacting with everything and anything.

There’s a kitchen, yard, bath, living room, bedroom, and rooftop patio. Each area can be decorated and characters can be placed in the scene to play with. Many of the elements are interactive, like a fun waterslide.

The menu is based on a smartphone with icons for newsfeed, map, daily gift, BarbieGram (yes, like Instagram), a camera, paint, decorations, and cleanup.

To take advantage of all the features in the game, like Ken’s Poolparty, players will need to get a subscription to the VIP Club. There is still plenty to explore and engage with, but the more dynamic portions of the game require a premium account.

This game does require sound on throughout as Barbie guides new players from the Dreamhouse to various locations in Malibu.

Summary

This is a fun game for kids who love Barbie and want a chance to enter Barbie’s world. The experience without a subscription is fairly lite and it’s clear throughout the entire game that a lot of the content is locked away (with fun videos to show what players are missing out on). The subscription is a little expensive compared to other games but does unlock the majority of the experience.
