Charades! Kids is a fun, interactive app that has a lot of charade sets with a lot of variety that will appeal to children and adults who like nostalgia. While there are ads in this game, they are only mildly irritating as opposed to experience ruining, and our playtesters found them to be acceptable in the overall experience of the game of charades. We appreciated that you don’t need to spend any money to unlock all the content because any locked content is accessible as you just play the game and earn coins after completed sets. 

While the game requires knowledge of pop culture and activities, we wouldn’t consider it educational. It is a lot of fun though!

The linked privacy policy leads to a google doc, which does not mention COPPA compliance explicitly, but does appear to have regard for children’s safety, and does not participate in information collection outside of what is necessary to provide the experience to you. They do use third parties that collect cookie information to utilize targeted ads. 

There is a constant small banner advertising to you from 3rd party sometimes local advertisers, and video ads will play after each completed set. There are also 3 in-app purchases to make: 

• Remove the ads for .99 cents, 
• Watch an ad and get rewarded 25 coins
• $3.99 to remove ads and receive 500 coins.

GAME PLAY

The menu opens up to two tabs. “Quick Play” which allows you to jump in and play quickly without any set teams or rounds, and “Versus”, which allows you to play with your friends up to 4 teams and 7 rounds. After choosing between those two tabs, you will be taken to the set categories catalog. From here you can choose between 31 charade sets.

All of these set categories are aimed toward children, however many of the cards in them require recognition or viewing of movies from up to 30 years ago. This can make playing with adults fun as well, as the content is not restricted to the last 10 years. After making a set selection, the round begins.

In the settings, you can choose to change the round times from 60, 90, and 120 seconds. During this time, you play charades as you know it, using your phone facing outward placed on your forehead tilting back to skip (at no penalty), or tilting forward to indicate a correct guess. At the end of the time limit, a brief 10-15 second video ad (sometimes skippable after 5 seconds) will play, followed by a summary of the correct guesses, skips, and consequent scores. 

Of the sets, there are 23 unlocked sets and 8 unlockable sets. Each unlockable set costs 100 in-game coins. These coins are awarded to you 10 at a time after each finished set and subsequent video ad. 

There is also a setting where you can create your own sets to play with your friends. 

There is also a store tab locked behind a quick math problem for parents where you can remove the ads for .99 cents, watch an ad and get rewarded 25 coins, or pay $3.99 to remove ads and receive 500 coins.

Summary

Charades! Kids is a free charades game with a few ads for anyone who likes movies, toys, and charades. With some (unpenalized skippable) obscure cards and some very recent recognizable ones, this app is sure to have something for everyone.
