Duolingo ABC is a free app designed to help kids read and write in English.

Best known for their language learning apps, Duolingo has created great, bite-sized experiences for young learners to learn the alphabet, basic words, and phonics.

There are more than 300 interactive lessons with each lesson lasting about 5 minutes on average. They are broken down into small chunks allowing for a shorter (or longer) daily practice. We found each lesson to be just the right length for kids under six.

The lessons themselves follow a similar pattern throughout the app setting a nice cadence. Parents can set up multiple profiles which we found to be great for families with kids close in age. You can also enable your microphone for more interaction with the app.

The app is very intuitive and has a cute and basic art style. Corrections are soft and the lessons repeat just enough to help kids continue to move forward. We found this to be a great supplement to school learning.

The parental controls are simple with the ability to set up each child’s account, with age and level being the key modifiers. Increasing the experience level unlocks content further into the experience, but the format remains the same throughout.

Duolingo is a U.S. based app developer and their privacy policy is clear that you and your child’s data is protected and not shared. The free educational app is also free of any advertising, meaning your child will be focused on learning without distractions.

GAME PLAY

When you first start the app you’ll set up a basic profile for your child consisting of their name and experience level. Starting at the lowest level you’ll begin at the very start of a linear map that goes block-by-block as your child completes each section.

The app is very intuitive and easy to use. The app does require audio, but your microphone doesn’t need to be turned on, it’s entirely optional and does not drastically affect the experience.

As your child works their way through each lesson they’ll experience fun little celebrations for their accomplishments. Returning each day also earns them stars.

If you’ve started at too basic or difficult a level you can enter the parent dashboard and change to another level type. This either moves you further along the map (more advanced) or takes you back towards the start (beginner).

Summary

This is a fantastic kids learning app, particularly for young kids learning the alphabet and phonics. The pace of the app is just right for the age group, the stories are fun, and the interactive components start to teach things like learning letter shapes in a fun way. We give this 5-stars across the board.
