Epic – Kids’ Books & Reading is a fantastic app for kids 2-12 that love to read (or could use a little encouragement to).
With over 40,000 titles, videos, audiobooks, quizzes, and more this app is a must-have for every family that can afford the monthly $7.99 subscription.
From picture books to chapter books, Epic offers titles from leading publishers in the kids’ space like National Geographic, Smithsonian, HarperCollins, and more. It also features popular titles like Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Fancy Nancy, Big Nate, and Clifford.
We like that kids unlock badges as they work their way through content, like the “Grand Master Book Worm” badge for finishing one hundred books or the “Daily Double” for reading two days in a row.
Parents can set up multiple profiles under one subscription, allowing for family sharing and individual tracking and libraries. In the profile, parents can choose their child’s interests for initial book recommendations and connect with teacher accounts (there is an educational version of this for classrooms).
We love the wide variety of titles available, no advertisements, and no additional purchases necessary outside of the monthly subscription. For less than the average price of a new softcover book, children can have access to a massive library of books at their fingertips.
We also appreciate offline mode for the app – great for keeping your child from hogging the wifi or for use on the road.
The start of the app is for parents (or educators) to set up children’s profiles and purchase a subscription plan ($7.99 – $71.99).
Upon setting up the profiles kids can dive right in and start looking for books they want to read. The explore screen will have recommendations based on the interests you shared in their profile setup, plus popular titles, award winners, top-picks, and more.
The categories encompass everything you’d find in a library or bookstore, plus international titles, videos, and quizzes. There is also a great selection of audiobooks available.
There are also reading buddies in eggs that hatch when a child reaches their reading goals. That along with badges is a great gamification element for kids who may not choose to read frequently on their own.
