A fun English learning app for kids just starting to speak or read, or even for kids learning English as a second language.
For kids just starting to speak or for children learning English as a second language, Lingokids is an incredible app for learning English vocabulary skills via play (or as Lingokids say: playlearning).
With content from Oxford University Press, this kidSafe+ approved app is ad-free and focuses on immersive learning through engaging gameplay. What we like is that it isn’t passive learning, but rather is interactive and tailored to various age ranges and English speaking skill levels.
The free version allows children to complete 3 activities a day and the paid subscription unlocks all the content in the app ($14.99/mo, $29.99 for 3 months, $59.99 for a year).
Within the parent dashboard, you can choose how many minutes a week your child should play, with the option to set up reminders. There’s a community section for parents, plus a curriculum section where you can see what your child is learning and how they are doing in each topic.
The cute art style and songs will draw in any young child and create a fun atmosphere for learning. Each unit progresses in a linear fashion, unlocking fun prizes along the way. The prizes fill in a “sticker book” style journal which is a fun addition for kids who love to collect. There are also fun offline activities, like crafts and recipes.
With so many interactive experiences kids are sure to be engaged throughout, however, we found some of the videos to be too long to maintain a younger child’s attention. We appreciated that making the wrong selection or choice was gently nudged without being too discouraging. We also love the offline mode so learning can happen at any time, with or without an internet connection.
Overall we found Lingokids to be worth the subscription cost, particularly for parents looking to get a headstart on their kids’ learning or for those who need a little additional support in their learning. We also like that it’s ad-free for uninterrupted play.
The start of the app will be focused on setting up your child’s account and selecting your subscription plan (there are significant savings for longer-term subscriptions).
Once your child is set up they’ll dive right in. The curriculum is based on the settings you chose in their account setup, based primarily on their level of vocabulary knowledge. The curriculum is made up of 10 units, with 6 topics within each unit. There is also extra content including seasonal and bonus activities.
The app is very user-friendly for most age groups, mainly tapping, dragging, and tracing. Younger kids may need some initial assistance, but any child familiar with mobile devices should be able to get started right away.
Within the parent dashboard, you can keep track of progress and see how your child is performing on each of the topics. There are additional links to games and songs to return to in order to help reinforce what your child learned in each unit. We recommend starting with the 1 or 3-month plan, as some children may be able to go through the content faster than others.
