Sloth World – Play and Learn! is a game that helps to entertain and teach children aged 3 to 6 years.
Sloth World – Play and Learn! is a kids learning app available in English and Portuguese to teach young kids logical reasoning, literacy, empathy, creativity, and healthy habits.
While the app certainly touches on these points we found it to be very light and not as educational as one might hope. The art style is cute, but the game feels a bit redundant and wasn’t engaging enough to capture a young child’s attention.
Like most apps for this age group, parents need to be present to help along the way, however, we found that this app requires a lot of hand-holding for a younger child to make progress.
The teaching within the app isn’t thematic, instead, it’s a series of screens with prompts that don’t build on one another. Completing a level unlocks new outfits and accessories for your sloth character, but none were exciting enough for our playtesters to want to continue. We didn’t find it to be particularly educational, more education-lite.
The membership paywall is present after the first section of the game and the additional sections aren’t a remarkable improvement from the first. We didn’t find it to be worth the cost.
The app is free of ads which is great. We were unable to review the privacy policy as the app developers’ website has been down.
The app begins with a quick backstory on the sloth and prompts the child to name their sloth character and start with a basic outfit. The bulk of the outfit options are locked with no indicator on how to unlock them (they are unlocked via gameplay).
Once inside, the first level is “home” where kids are given prompts around home items and habits, such as washing hands before eating and counting questions. When a child gets a question right the sloth character pops up onto the screen with the same “fantastic” or “nice work” line over-and-over again. The voice-over is a bit monotonous and the sound effects don’t elicit the sense of accomplishment many other kids learning apps do.
Once you complete the home experience you have to purchase a membership to unlock the additional areas. The game continues in the same fashion, just with different thematic elements.
